ARIO stands for Atmosphere: Response and Interactions with the Ocean

formerly and informally known as "chevre" (Group Océan Atmosphère et Teleconnections)

ARIO represents a growing interest in aspects of research at LEGOS concering the atmosphere. The atmosphere acts as the fast component in the climate system, providing communication between different ocean basins, between the tropics and the extratropics and within the tropical band. It also acts directly to force the ocean circulation and it responds to ocean surface conditions. Atmospheric and oceanic dynamics are very similar, so opportunities to transfer expertise from one domain to the other can be exploited.

Over the last two years we have concentrated exclusively on scientific meetings in which a speaker, usually from LEGOS, presents ongoing research on one of the themes listed above. Our aim is to foster commiunication and enthusiasm for the basic science. We envisage that this will lead to oncreased collaboration within LEGOS and with our close neighbours.

 Broad themes

  • Atmospheric circulation
  • Modelling (WRF tuning club)
  • Teleconnections:  Tropical and Tropical-Extratropical
  • Air-sea exchanges / coupled system
  • Regional climate / scale interactions / upscaling-downscaling

Next ARIO meeting
