Le projet SENSEnet

With the increasing recognition that fully understanding the oceans and the response to environmental change can only be achieved by greater temporal and spatial observations, the need for in situ sensors which operate over a large range of concentrations in a variety of marine environments is critical. With this in mind, SENSEnet will focus on three main technological areas:

  • Optical sensors
Develop existing and new optical based sensor systems for application to the marine environment, enabling determination of oxygen, nutrients, pH and organic trace pollutants.

  • Long term in situ chemical sensors
Develop electrochemical sensors including biosensors for use in diverse environments to determine parameters including pH, carbonate concentration, nutrients, methane and benthic fluxes

  • Generic sensor issues
Address issues common to all sensors which are mainly a consequence of design by separate laboratories and companies. These include sensor integration procedures, data format standardisation, communications, multisensor data display and biofouling. The sensors will be deployed in diverse environments, on multiple platforms including buoys, ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles), AUVs (Autonomously Operated Vehicles), seafloor and mid-water observatories and CTDs.
