Coastal erosion

Coastal erosion is the removal of material from a coastal profile. More specifically, we focus on the redistribution of coastal sediments by currents driven by waves, tides and winds.  The study of erosion and sediment redistribution is called coastal morphodynamics. It must be compared with other processes responsible for shoreline retreat, e.g., relative sea level rise associated with the absolute changes of sea level and, often more importantly, land subsidence due to compaction and drainage.
