FORECAST DESCRIPTION

CROCO is a descendent of the Regional Oceanic Modeling System (ROMS-AGRIF version). It is setup here for operational regional modeling following Marchesiello et al. (2008). This is actually a downscaled forecast approach since the regional model is forced at the lateral boundaries and relaxed in the interior domain by global forecasts provided by Mercator Ocean or the UK Met Office (both products available at the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service). The atmospheric Global Forecast System GFS of the National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP, NWS/NOAA) is used for surface forcing. Two days of simulation are run in hindcast mode. This provides balanced initial conditions for a 3-day forecast. A shell script manages data downloading, hindcast and forecast simulations as well as data analysis for this page.

GLOBAL OCEAN 1/12° PHYSICS ANALYSIS AND FORECAST UPDATED DAILY: The Operational Mercator global Ocean analysis and forecast system – at 1/12 degree - is providing 7 days of 3D global ocean forecasts updated daily and ocean analysis updated weekly. The time series start on January 1st 2013 and is aggregated in time in order to reach a two full year’s time series sliding window. This product includes daily mean files of temperature, salinity, currents, sea level and ice parameters from the top to the bottom of the Ocean over the Global Ocean. It also includes 2-hourly mean surface fields for temperature, salinity and currents.

GLOBAL OCEAN 1/4° PHYSICS ANALYSIS AND FORECAST UPDATED DAILY: The UK Met Office Global Seasonal coupled forecast system (GloSea5) is used to provide 7 days of 3D global ocean forecasts, at ¼ degree, updated daily. In addition the Forecast Ocean Assimilation Model (FOAM) ocean analysis used to initialise the coupled system is provided daily, along with an updated analysis a day later which makes use of more observations. This product includes daily mean files of temperature, salinity, currents, sea level, mixed layer depth and sea ice parameters.

GLOBAL FORECAST SYSTEM: NOAA is running the atmospheric GFS system four times per day (00 UTC, 06 UTC, 12 UTC, and 18 UTC) out to 16 days. For the first week, computation is done at a resolution of about 28-km. The GFS data is then gridded for users on a global 0.5-degree or even 0.25 degree resolution grid.
