Title : On the estimation of lake ice thickness and on-ice snow depth from satellite observations
The estimation of lake ice thickness by remote sensing means has been the topic of recent investigations by my research group at the University of Waterloo and one that I am further exploring with colleagues at LEGOS. In this talk I will present the progress we have made to date on :
1) the retrieval of ice thickness from microwave (AMSR-E) and thermal (MODIS) sensors
2) our understanding of radiation interactions with snow and ice properties on lakes.
Intensive field measurement campaigns using ground-based scatterometers (Ku- and X-band) as well as radiative transfer and 1-D thermodynamic lake ice modeling experiments have been essentials to the development of our satellite-based retrieval algorithms and the identification of challenges and opportunities for the use of C-, Ku- and Ka-band radar altimetry in the estimation of ice thickness and on-ice snow depth for high-latitude lakes.
