Variability in the origins and pathways of Pacific Equatorial Undercurrent

Abstract:

The Equatorial Undercurrent (EUC) is responsible for supplying
nutrients, particularly iron, to the productive Equatorial Pacific
Ocean and has a number of distinct sources in the tropical western
Pacific. Although the mean circulation and sources of EUC water are
reasonably well understood, it is unclear how these sources vary on
seasonal and interannual timescales. We apply a Lagrangian analysis to
a tenth degree ocean simulation, with the objective to identity
variability in the source distributions of the EUC over a 17 year
period (1993-2010). While the EUC total volume transport changes on
interannual and seasonal time scales, the relative contributions of
the source waters remain remarkably unchanged. Also, the changes in
the pathways and transit times are asymmetric around neutral times in
the ENSO phase. This is hypothesized to be due to the long times (2 -
4 years) taken for the source waters to reach the EUC and the large
spread in transit times among the pathways of the different sources.
This may also have implications for iron transport.
