Air-Sea CO2 flux and DIC Vertical Structure in the Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ) of the Eastern Tropical Pacific off Mexico

Abstract: Oxygen Minimum Zones (OMZ’s) are known for being important sources of CO2 when physical forcing brings subsurfacewater with low oxygen and high inorganic carbon to the surface. This study examines the influence of the OMZ of the Eastern Tropical Pacific off Mexico (ETPM) on the DIC structure and air-sea CO2 flux, considering variations in the oxycline depth and subsurface water influenced by local physical phenomena. Result will be discussed in how the surface distribution of DIC (pCO2) could be controlled by advection of surface water masses, as well as by biological carbon consumption. In addition, some evidence will be presented in how subsurface rich on DIC could have an influence on DIC structure during mesoscale phenomena.
