Using Nd isotopes to reconstruct paleo-Fe supply to the Northwest Pacific over the last glacial cycle

Abstract : A strong and pervasive productivity peak has been observed in cores around the North Pacific during the Bølling-Allerød warm period of the last deglaciation, about 14ka ago. It has been hypothesized that this peak may have been caused by an influx of iron from the continental shelves as they were flooded during the deglaciation.  The Nd and Sr isotopic compositions of detrital material originating from the volcanic margins surrounding the North Pacific are easily distinguished from those of mineral dust originating from the Asian loess plateau.  We reconstruct the paleo-Fe supply over the last glacial cycle and measure multiple proxies of productivity in a single core from the Northwest Pacific to directly examine the hypothesis that the productivity peak during the Bølling-Allerød warm period was caused by the deglacial flooding of continental shelves.
