The dynamics of the Aegean-Levantine Seas and their climatic implications

 

Abstract: The eastern Mediterranean Sea is known to have a complex thermohaline/wind driven circulation. Observational and modeling strategies were adopted to investigate the circulation pattern variability of the Aegean-LevantineSeas.


Aiming at portraying the water masses and identifying formation processes, recent winter cruises were conducted across the plateaus and depressions of the Aegean Sea. The observational results unveiled a complicated coupling of the Aegean’s major sub-basins. The surface and deep waters are relatively decoupled with diverse origin characteristics, while the intermediate layers act as connectors of the main thermohaline cells.


Investigating the regional dynamics at different temporal and spatial scales, a hindcast simulation was performed (1960-2000) with an eddy resolving model. The Eastern Mediterranean Transient is the most prominent climatic event of the period. The impact of the atmospheric versus lateral forcing on the regional content during the pre-EMT period, suggests preconditioning by surface fluxes mostly related to surface heat loss, and lateral fluxes mostly related to salt flux. While long-term trends are preconditioning the changes in the Aegean stratification, it is the extreme heat loss pulses, related to the variability of the wind field that is controlling the formation processes in the region.
