Coupled assimilation and the role of ocean salinity

 

Abstract: An ocean only and a weakly coupled assimilation system, based on the Ensemble Kalman Filter, have been developed at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology for initializing dynamical seasonal forecasts. The assimilation systems will be briefly described. Ocean re-analysis will be compared with re-analysis from other international systems. The impact of the assimilation systems on seasonal forecasts will be described.
 
A key feature of the new systems is the assimilation of salinity data. It was found that improved simulation of salinity in the new systems led to significantly improved forecasts of the tropical oceans, compared with earlier assimilation systems that did not assimilate salinity. The importance of salinity assimilation and how salinity errors can impact dynamical forecasts will be illustrated by a case study. The representation of salinity by different international ocean assimilation systems will also be discussed.
