Diurnal Variations in Upper Ocean Temperature: Implications for Ocean Mixed-Layer Depth

 

 

Abstract :

The upper ocean is directly influenced by diurnal forcing, and mixed-layer temperatures can experience a clear diurnal cycle.  Satellites are able to observe diurnal variations in the ocean's skin temperature but are not able to penetrate below the surface to provide information about diurnal mixed-layer variability.  In this study, individual Argo float temperature profiles have been paired with microwave sea surface temperatures collected within 48 hours before or after the profile.  The temperature differences are indicative of a clear diurnal cycle within the ocean mixed layer, with an amplitude that decreases with increasing latitude, from about 0.1 degrees C near the equator to 0.02 degrees C near 60 degrees N and S.   At 5 m depth, maximum temperatures occur around 18:00.  The diurnal signal propagates downward through the water and is detectable to about 20 m depth, with maximum temperatures occurring slightly later at greater depths.  Winds also vary on a diurnal cycle, but in constrast with the diurnal cycle of temperature or radiative forcing, the diurnal cycle of the wind depends on location.  Particularly in the tropics, the phasing of diurnal winds relative to diurnal temperature/radiative forcing can have a net impact on the mean mixed-layer depth.
