Titre : A multi-scale model for the Scheldt land-sea continuum
Résumé : The Scheldt River has its source in France, crosses Belgium and The Netherlands before it finally reaches the North Sea. During its journey the river receives huge amounts of pollutants from industry, agriculture and the densely urbanised regions it crosses. In the past decades the inputs have changed due to changing human activities, resulting in changed ecosystem responses, probably amplified by the simultaneous climatic change. On the other hand, we stand on the verge of more dramatic changes both in climate and direct human pressure, and it is not clear what will be the actual impact on the water quality and ecosystem in the Scheldt watershed and the North Sea. This issue is the research subject of a network of Belgian universities, called TIMOTHY (www.climate.be/TIMOTHY).
A first phase of TIMOTHY is almost finished and some of the results obtained within this phase will be presented. More particularly the focus will be on the finite element model SLIM (www.climate.be/slim) and its application to the tidal river-sea continuum of the Scheldt. This model exploits the finite element method to solve the governing equations on an unstructured grid, allowing to locally increase the spatial resolution without blowing up the computational cost. A brief overview will be given of the first applications successfully tackled with SLIM, followed by an outlook to current and future developments.
