GEOTRACES International Project Office

  • GEOTRACES is an international marine geochemistry programme which aims to improve the understanding of biogeochemical cycles of trace elements and their isotopes (

  • Under the umbrella of SCOR, it coordinates the research activity of more than 35 countries. This coordination is assured by an « International Project Office » located at LEGOS, its main activities are described below.

The major world’s exploration programs, characteristics from the fields of science of the universe, require a coordination, an office called « International Project Office, IPO, » which assures also the worldwide communication of the programme. The IPOs, for themselves and for all activities that they organize during the lifetime of the programme (international meetings and symposia, publications, media contacts, etc.) are a platform that allows projecting internationally the research done locally and regionally. At the same time, they give an important visibility to the laboratory, the city and the regions that host them. The GEOTRACES IPO is located at LEGOS (Observatoire Midi-Pyrénées, Toulouse) under the scientific responsibility of Catherine Jeandel (DR CNRS). Elena Masferrer Dodas is the Executive Officer.

IPO’s missions

Daily tasks of the IPO are both very large and very demanding: running a network with colleagues from more than 35 nationalities; organizing and implementing workshops and seminars in several foreign countries (the present year Germany, USA-Hawaii, South Africa, etc.) and dealing with all the related administrative and budgetary matters; interacting with the GEOTRACES data manager (located in Southampton, UK); setting-up and maintaining the programme website and mailing list; publishing of science highlights and the bi-monthly eNewsletter; reporting to sponsors (SCOR-NSF, etc.); keeping up the worldwide GEOTRACES publications database, etc.

Some figures

Distribution of dissolved 230Th in the North Atlantic Ocean represented in 3D (R. Schlitzer, Low concentrations correspond to zones where the marine particles are more abundant and actively remove elements from the water column (margins, productive zones). On the contrary, the gyres centers are characterised by high concentrations of 230Th. Consequently, the distribution of dissolved 230Th informs about the location and intensity of the processes that remove many trace elements from the ocean.

GEOTRACES is scheduled to run until 2020. France participated with three sections - IPY Bonus-Good Hope (2008), GP12 PANDORA (2012) and GA01 GEOVIDE (2014) - and three process studies - KEOPS I and II and AMANDES-. It is anticipated that we also undertake sections in the southern Indian Ocean in collaboration with Australia (ongoing discussions in 2014). The IPO is expected to remain in Toulouse for the duration of the program by 1) integration of Elena Masferrer Dodas at UPS on a permanent position (2014) and 2) a long-term financial support by NSF, CNRS, UPS and GEOMAR Helmholtz-Centre for Ocean Research Kiel. NIOZ (H), AWI-Bremerhaven, University of Tokyo... contribute funding also sporadically.
