Observabilité du Courant Liguro-Provencal dans les observations altimétriques.

Despite the technical problems encountered in the coastal zone by satellite altimetry, solutions exist to recover coastal observations from existing altimetric data. Using some of these solutions, we have reprocessed more than 14 years of alongtrack sea level anomalies data from T/P and Jason-1 missions over the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea and derived time series of cross-track geostrophic surface velocity anomalies. A comparison to in-situ observations indicates that altimetry is able to observe synoptic variations of the Northern Current flowing along the slope in that area. The seasonal evolution of the shelf edge flow is documented using results from satellite altimetry and from sea surface temperature (SST). Despite the large inter-track spacing of the T/P and Jason-1 missions, the regional picture of the circulation that emerges from altimetry agrees with previous knowledge: intensification (decrease) of the boundary flow in winter (summer). But it also reveals interesting new aspects of the coastal current system (Birol et al., 2010).
