Titre: Transport of hydrothermal iron, manganese and aluminum across the eastern south Pacific ocean during the U.S Geotraces eastern Pacific zonal transect cruise

 

Résumé: Shipboard measurements during the US geotraces Eastern Pacific Zonal Transect cruise that crossed the Southern East Pacific Rise reveal an astounding transport of hydrothermal dissolved iron (dFe), manganese (dMn) and aluminum (dAl) westward ~ 4,000 km into the South Pacific basin. Post-cruise measurements of the conservative hydrothermal tracer excess helium-3 indicate that 85% of the hydrothermal dFe is lost within 80 km of the ridge crest, presumably as a result of oxidation, scavenging and precipitation.  Beyond that distance, dFe and 3Hexsdecrease westward at a constant ratio of ~ 7 x 106 mol/mol (r2 = 0.97), indicating conservative behavior of dFe and therefore decreases in dFe are solely the result of dilution over this distance.

These data were used in the model of Tagliabue et al and reveal that hydrothermal Fe enhances primary productivity in the Fe-limited Southern Ocean. This will be the primary topic of my talk, however I may also discuss some ongoing projects that examine long distance transport of Fe, Mn, and Al in the oceans.
