Of fish and men: mixing science, aquaculture, and politics in the fjords of Chile

ABSTRACT: The 2009 collapse of salmon faming in southern Chile (41- 46°S), an area of fjords, was triggered by an outbreak of the Infectious Salmon Anemia (ISA) virus, which caused a 20% decrease in production and significantly affected the financial situation of many business in the area and a regional social crisis. This prompted an increase in regulations from the government, a step seen with interest by the banking sector, and the use of hydrodynamic models to study the problem. In this talk we will describe, from a scientific and political perspective, the current efforts to study the interaction of aquaculture and the environment and the increasing use (and misuse) of numerical models of the ocean (ROMS, MIKE3, MOHID, and others), and of the atmosphere (MM5, WRF), to mitigate the effect of recurring outbreaks of ISA virus and also salmon parasites such as the sea lice (Caligus rogercresseyi).
