TITRE: Swash zone processes on Sand and Gravel Beaches

Abstract: This seminar will present a series of major field and laboratory experiments designed to examine swash zone hydrodynamics and sediment transport at the time scale of individual waves. The results obtained from this study provide important new information and understanding of this highly active region of the beach. In particular it was found that the swash zone is in a state of rapidly evolving dynamic equilibrium in which individual swashes could transport very large volumes of sediment but net morphology change over many hundreds of swashes was consistently small. Ongoing work in this area hopes to probe the nature of this dynamic equilibrium further, hopefully leading to a swash zone model based on equilibrium concepts.
