Titre : Development of an ocean model for application to the Antarctic continental shelf seas

 

 

 

Résumé : The presentation will describe a model that is being developed to investigate the effect of a changing climate on the mass balance of ice shelves and dense water formation. The model is based on the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) which is able to simulate interactions between flows and topography, such as buoyant plumes of ice shelf water that can rise under ice shelves and dense plumes of Antarctic bottom water that flow down the continental shelf to the deep ocean. ROMS has been customised to include thermodynamic and mechanical ice-shelf/ocean interactions, frazil dynamics and tides. The application of the model and its scientific focus to several regions around Antarctic will be described. These regions contain the Amery Ice Shelf, the Mertz Ice Tongue and the Totten Glacier and are part of a larger research effort at the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre. Preliminary results from a circum-Antarctic application show about half of the present net accumulation over Antarctica is melted from the underside of ice shelves. Future work will use the model shown here to investigate the impact of projected climate change on Antarctic mass balance.
